CCR Senior Staff Attorney Shayana Kadidal will join a panel discussion about the tragic December 2015 shooting in San Bernardino, California and subsequent heated dispute: should law enforcement be able to compel a technology company to decrypt information stored on its products? 

The dispute is part of a much broader debate. When should law enforcement be able to obtain access to citizens’ private information? What should tech companies’ obligations be – to customers? – to law enforcement? Do current laws adequately protect both privacy and national security? What right to privacy can we reasonably expect in the digital age? Is it even technologically possible for companies to allow a “back door” through encryption for the government without undermining the security of our data?
