The ELS along with SALDF and NLG present a screening of the film If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary, 2012.

The film follows the case of an Earth Liberation Front activist, Daniel McGowan, who engaged in acts of arson and property destruction as a form of protest against environmental degradation.  Subject to a "terrorism enhancement" during sentencing, McGowan is now serving a 7-year sentence in a restrictive Communications Management Unit in the Terre Haute federal facility in Indiana.

A panel will follow the film and will address how the law treats domestic activists, the line between activism and terrorism, and whether or how prosecutorial strategies may threaten legitimate expression by citizens.  One of the film's directors, Sam Cullman, will be there to answer questions about the film, as will Rachel Meeropol, one of the attorneys from the Center for Constitutional Rights who has been working on Daniel's case.  Odette Wilkins from Equal Justice Alliance will also be there to address and field questions concerning what activities can be considered "terrorism" under Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act.
