The Center For Constitutional Rights is proud of be a sponsor of the National Convening on Gang Policing Friday, December 7, 2018. 

Across the country, thousands of poor young people of color are being labeled gang members and criminalized based on where they live, what color clothes they choose to wear, who they choose to socialize with, and the color of their skin. Since 2016, 400 “gang takedowns” have been conducted, resulting in 2,000 people arrested under the RICO Act (federal conspiracy law) in New York City alone. Similar policing models are being used in other states, such as California, Illinois, and Oregon.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and East Side House will be hosting a national convening focusing on three areas of concern: Police Over-surveillance, Community Disempowerment, Restoration and Healing. The convening will feature experts in the fields of data-driven policing, surveillance, community trauma, and community organizing. We will create a space where impacted residents, community organizers, advocates and youth leaders from New York City and other major U.S. cities can learn and share organizing strategies for combating the discriminatory and harmful impacts of gang policing.
