Stop-and-frisk abuses and other abusive NYPD practices over the past few decades resulted in a federal court ordering that changes be developed with community input, as the result of several class action lawsuits including CCR's Floyd v. City of New York litigation. Though the number of total reported stop-and-frisks may have decreased in the past several years, the reform process is ongoing with significant changes still needed. New Yorkers continue to face abusive and unconstitutional stops in the streets and LGBTQ New Yorkers have an opportunity to have their concerns heard at this town hall.
True reform doesn’t come from just decreased numbers of recorded stops – it requires systemic changes to policies and practices that advance accountability. The court-ordered reform process offers formal opportunities for communities to put forward solutions that help protect New Yorkers from stop-and-frisk abuses and abusive policing. Be part of that process to hold police accountable to our communities and our solutions.
